Knee Socks, Thigh Highs, And Anklets

"Hosiery is the new handbag," I scribbled in my notebook yesterday afternoon at Vera Wang, when I saw a model make her way down the runway in what felt like the 10th pair of thigh-highs I'd seen that day. Lust-worthy totes and satchels may have been the hot trimmings five years ago, but I'm warming up to the idea of socks as the It accessory of the moment. How about you

here's no easy way to tell you this, ladies, so I'm just going to come out with it. A lot of people you'd otherwise consider completely fashionable are going to be wearing socks and sandals next fall. Or slightly-cooler-than-a-Catholic-school-uniform-style knee socks. Or--yes, Cher Horowitz would approve--thigh highs! Traditional wisdom tells us that socks and open-toed shoes are a total Don't, but we've seen starlets like Chloe Sevigny and Alexa Chung pull it off effortlessly, so who's to say we regular Janes can't do it with a little styling magic, too? Can you be convinced that hosiery is, in fact, the new handbag, or will you remain steadfast in your refusal to wear knee socks after the third grade?
